Club History
Hockey in the Wakatipu goes back before the 1950's, when the competition was made up of teams from Queenstown, Arrowtown, Glenorchy and the Remarkables.
In 1978 the ‘Queenstown Ladies Hockey Club’ team colours were yellow and navy. The uniform was a yellow top, navy skirt, and yellow & navy socks. At some point it changed to the Wakatipu colours of navy and light blue that is worn today.
The original hockey field was on the Queenstown Recreation Ground beside the Wakatipu Rugby Club. When the new Queenstown Primary School was built, the Hockey Club shifted. The field required marking of the lines and repairing the goals at the beginning of each season. Joe O'Connell often helped with the marking of the field.
On Sunday 19 June 1977 the Queenstown Ladies Hockey Club had a sponsored ‘Hockeyathon’ to raise funds for the installation of floodlights at the playing field.
The club members dribbled a hockey ball from the original location of the Queenstown Post Office via Arthurs Point, Arrowtown, Lake Hayes, Frankton and back to the Queenstown Post Office. They raised $960. They also hosted an afternoon tea consisting of homemade sandwiches and cream cakes!
Judy Nelson was Club Captain in the late 1970's to early 1980's when the women had three teams. These teams would be made up of players from Queenstown District High School (now Wakatipu High School). Queenstown Ladies Hockey Club would play an annual challenge against Glenorchy for the 'Scheelite Shield". This was a big event!
In 2011, the Queenstown District Council developed two tennis courts into the Frankton training turf, which allowed the teams to train under lights in Queenstown - instead of travelling to Cromwell just for training!
In early 2019, the 'Queenstown Hockey Club' changed to its new name of 'Wakatipu Hockey Club' to incorporate the wider areas of Queenstown - from Central Queenstown, Jacks Point, Fernhill, Arrowtown, Gibbston Valley to Arthurs Point.
We hope to have a full playing turf in the Frankton region in the coming years! Watch this space...!
